Today is the first day of the year 2006 and the first Sunday of the New Year. As I was preparing for sermon, God has laid something on my heart. Some of you have already had New Year’s Resolution. A son called his parents to wish them a happy new year and when his father answered the phone, he asked his dad, “Dad, what is your new year’s resolution?” His father said, “To make your mother as happy as I can all year.” When his mother got on the phone he asked the same question again. His mom replied, “To see that you dad keeps his New Year’s resolution.” Some of you had failed to keep the new year’s resolution while others kept them through out the year. Whether you succeeded or failed to keep resolution, I encourage you to give have another new year’s resolution one more try with the realization that the Holy Spirit will join you this year and the belief with the Bible verse in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.”
1. Build a closer relationship with Christ
“If a man remain in me, and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5)
“As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.’ (Joshua 24:15)
· Set aside time for reading the Bible
· Spent time in prayer
· Share your faith with other Christian friend
2. Involve more in worship and small groups
Etc (Eater, Thanksgiving Christmas) Christians cannot grow
Don’t
a. Do not take keeping Sabbath lightly (Exodus 20:8)
b. Do not plan to do anything on Sunday or other days
Do
a. Discuss with your family to worship God every Sunday
b. Preparation day
c. Tell your boss and others, “I am a Christian!”
3. Offer your tithe
“”Bring your whole tithe into the storehouse…see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and our out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.” (Malachi 3:10)
4.
Live Holy
a. Undesirable habits
b. Sin
c. Addiction
5. Reach out to community and the unsaved
Great Commission Matthew 28:19, “Make disciples of all nations.” Jesus wants us to reach out to the lost souls anytime and everywhere in season and out of season.
6. Serve others
Mark 10:45, “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.
7. Glorify God
It is Christians’ greatest goal.
1 Corinthians 10:31, “Do everything for the glory of God.”
Joshua
24:14-15
14 "Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the
gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve
the LORD. 15 But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose
for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your
forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose
land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the
LORD." NIV
15:1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every
branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he
prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of
the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No
branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you
bear fruit unless you remain in me.
5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he
will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not
remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches
are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my
words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8 This is
to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my
disciples. NIV
