10 Commandments For Being Godly Mothers (Part 1)
Esther 4:12- 17, Titus 2:3-5
May 14, 2006
The Rev. Kong Namkung

Mothers in North America are very busy.  In this busy society, to be a good and influential mother is a demanding job; especially being a godly mother is very hard.  To be a godly mother is like carrying your friend soldier’s M-16 in 50 miles march or like a pregnant mother who has not a baby, but has triplet in her stomach.  So on this special day, Mother’s Day, God laid something on my heart about being a godly mother.  In order to be a godly mother, all mothers require to be contacted by the grace and love of God.

John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, talks about the means of grace.  The means of Grace is centered on Christ.  It is a sacred moment in which Christ in re-represented an incarnational moment. It includes baptism and Holy Communion. We also have some sacred moments as an answer to human needs such as time to read the scripture, confirmation, marriage for most of us, ordination for pastors, forgiveness, healing, and so on.  Based on all of these, the means of grace and Christians’ sacred moments, 10 commandments for being a godly mother will be presented.

  1. Mothers shall say grace before each meal.

It does not mean that a mother needs to say grace every meal.  A mother can help her family to have a rule to say grace before each meal.

How many hours do you spend a week for buying things for meals, and fixing the meal, and eating the food, cleaning the dishes? At least a mother spends at least 25 hours a week.  You spend lots of hours for the meal and something related to meals. I encourage you to spend time in prayers.

While you go Food Lion for grocery, pray to God that you may choose right ingredients for your family’s health.  While you are cooking, ask God you to cook well with right ingredients, right temperature, and right amount of time. Then when grace is given over the food, be thankful to God.  When you clean the dishes, pray to God, “O God, as I am cleaning these dirty dishes, clean my heart and create in me a clean heart O God.” (Ps 51:10)

  1. Mothers shall set aside time to pray each day.

Your role model is Jesus.  So if you want to follow Jesus, pray early in the morning.  Mark 1:35, “In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out tot a deserted place, and there he prayed.”

If you are a night person, then you pray after all your children went to bed.   The bottom line is to set aside time to pray each day.

Susan Wesley prayed with cover her face with apron.  When she prayed, her children did not border her.

Remember, you are feeding your family not only with the food, but also with prayers.

  1. At least once a week, mothers shall pray out loud with another person.  In other words, find your prayer partner and pray with your partner.  Korean Christians’ call it, Tong Sung ki Do.   When you pray out loud, you pray with a family member, a friend, a person at work or church.

It is very important to hear your voice when you pray to God because God and others will know your prayer requests.

If you do not know how to pray, here is an example. You follow the words “Acts.”  The book of Acts is full of the Holy Spirit, that is why prayer can be followed the word ACTS.  What is ACTS?

Adoration: Praising and loving God for who God is

Confession : admitting your sins to God

Thanksgiving: Gratitude to God for God’s blessing

Supplication: Calling out to God for your daily needs

  1. Mothers shall read at least one verse of Scripture every day.

To read one verse of the Bible just takes less than 30 second.   After read it, you think about it what it mean to you and inscribe it in your heart throughout the day.

Deuteronomy 6:6, “Keep these words that I am commanding you today in your heart.  Recite them to your children and talk about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise.  Bind them as a sign on your hand, fix them as an emblem on your forehead, and write them on the door posts of your house and on your gates.”

Matthew 4:4 Jesus said, “Men shall not live bread alone, but live by the word of God.”

God uses you to feed your family.  But you also need to be fed spiritually.  So, read at least one verse a day.  It is a simple and lenient task. If you are trustworthy in a few things, God will put you in charge of many things.” (Matthew 25: 23)

  1. Mothers shall attend worship at our church at least three times a month.

Part 2 will be presented on May 21, 2006

Esther 4:12-17

12 When Esther's words were reported to Mordecai, 13 he sent back this answer: "Do not think that because you are in the king's house you alone of all the Jews will escape. 14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father's family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time as this?"

15 Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: 16 "Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my maids will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish."

17 So Mordecai went away and carried out all of Esther's instructions.  NIV

Titus 2:3-5

3 Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. 4 Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.  NIV
