10 Commandments For Being
Godly Mothers (Part 2)
Esther 4:12- 17, Titus
2:3-5
May 21, 2006
The Rev. Kong Namkung
Part 1 of this 2 part sermon was presented on May 14, 2006
Mothers shall at least twice a month meet with a group.
What do you do in a small group? You pray, reflect on Scripture, and build one another up for the body of Christ (small group, Sunday School, prayer group, woman Bible study group, United Methodist Women, etc).
What you should not do in a small group. Do not talk negative things about other persons or church. The small group is not for sharing your complains. It is for your spiritual growth. The negative attitudes hurt the body of Christ, your spiritual growth, and others’ as well.
How do you prevent from having negative conversation? If anyone speaks negatively or put stumbling block before you in a small group, ask that person to talk the other person whom she is talking about or church leaders.
When you are in a small group, share with others what God has done for you, how Jesus loves you and you felt it, encouraging others, say something nice about others and church, share your denial of Jesus in your life and ask others to pray with you.
Philippians 3:8, “Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.” Titus 2: 3 says, “mature Women, not be slanders.” Why not? It explains next two verses. It helps you and others to be loved and to love, self-controlled, chaste, good managers of the household, kind, be submissive to their husbands.” (Titus 2:4-5)
Mothers shall take communion at least once 3 times a month.
Remember when Jesus invites to his table, Jesus tells us specifically who can come to his table, “Those who love him, earnestly repent their sins, and seek to live peace with one another.”
At least once a month, mothers give of themselves to others (to be a volunteer at a homeless shelter or soup kitchen, visit in a nursing home, tutor a child, visit a prisoner, cut a neighbors’ lawn, etc)
In other words, practice what you believe and demonstrate Christ’s love in the world because the Bible says, “Just as the body with you the spirit is dead, so faith without works is also dead.” (James 2:26) “If we love one another, God lives in us, and his love is perfected in us.” (1 John 4:12)
Mothers fast once a week
Some of church members and I were led by the Holy Spirit and decided to have a three days fasting as we wanted to grow more spiritually with the spirit of participation of suffering of Jesus on the Cross. The last day was Saturday. Do you remember that we had an Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday before Easter? I want to tell you how much I was struggling. Each time I smelled the hot dog. I was ready to give up the three days fasting.
Again, some of us wanted to fast on Thursday. I had a really long week because I went to workshop for spiritual formation and helped the chicken pastry on Thursday. As I took out bones from the chicken, I swollen many times with the heart of pray, while Antonia ate some of chicken, “Lord, help me.”
(I give up food for a period of time, or do a Media fast and go without electronic media- TV, Raid Etc- for a day.)
Isaiah 58:6, “Is not this the fast that I choose, to loose the bonds of injustice, to undo the thongs of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free and to break every yoke?” Dwight talked about Esther, who fasted three days and 3 nights with heart, “If I perish, I perish.” (Esther 4:16)
10. Mothers shall love their children and demonstrate it daily.
Elisa Morgan and Carol Kuykendall in their book What Every Child Needs speak of nine basic needs a child has and how they can be met in the language of love:
Security: a hold-me-close love
Affirmation: a crazy-about-me love
Belonging: a fit-me-into-the-family love
Discipline: a give-me-limits love
Guidance: a show-me and tell-me love
Respect: a let-me-be love
Play: a play-with-me love
Independence: a let-me-grow-up love
Hope: a give-me-hope love
In conclusion, here are some studies tell us today. 85% of born again believers accepted the Lord between the ages of 5 and 10. Half of everything an individual learns they learn in the first four years of their life. When asked of the greatest need in France, Napoleon responded emphatically, "Mothers!"
Mothers today are busy. In this busy society, “The Mom Ministry is one of the toughest assignments God ever gave anybody. She’s got to be as insightful as a psychologist, tough as a marine corps drill instructor, gentle as a nurse. She’s got to be a labor and management negotiator, a teacher, an electrician, a plumber and a carpenter. It requires an endless supply of energy, a massive amount of patience, an iron will and recognition of the fact that if she gets sick, she’s got to get well before the end of the school day. (Norman Bales, All About Families ministry)
But I encourage you to be busy for being a godly mother. Dr. Grace Ketterman writes: “Perhaps the most urgent need of our era is the restoration of the high value of godly mothering….Those of us who cherish biblical values must teach and practice them consistently. Those of us who are mothers must see that responsibility as a high privilege. We must reclaim our role as the shapers and supporters of the next generation of leaders and parents.”
Phil Ware of Heartlights, 2 Minute Meditations, says, "Being a mom is a soul craft. Moms are partners with God in crafting a child into an adult that is trained and ready to serve him."
Mothers, remember you are God’s partners and my prayers are with you that you live a godly life so that you children may see Jesus in you that they also become imitators of Christ. Happy Mother’s Day! Glory be to the Father, to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen
Esther 4:12-17
12 When Esther's words were reported to Mordecai, 13 he sent back this answer:
"Do not think that because you are in the king's house you alone of all the Jews
will escape. 14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance
for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father's family
will perish. And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a
time as this?"
15 Then Esther sent this reply to Mordecai: 16 "Go, gather together all the Jews
who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or
day. I and my maids will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the
king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish."
17 So Mordecai went away and carried out all of Esther's instructions. NIV
Titus 2:3-5
3 Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent in the way they live, not to be
slanderers or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good. 4 Then they can
train the younger women to love their husbands and children, 5 to be
self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to
their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God. NIV
